What to Expect During Your First Laser Hair Removal Session in Ottawa

The Laser: GentleMax Pro Plus by Candela

IVONNE uses the GentleMax Pro Plus for all laser hair removal. This is not a generic diode laser or an IPL (intense pulsed light) device. It is a dual-wavelength medical laser manufactured by Candela and cleared by both the FDA and Health Canada. Understanding what this specific device does and why it matters will help you understand what happens during your session.

Two Wavelengths, Two Purposes

The GentleMax Pro Plus houses two laser sources in a single platform:

755nm Alexandrite

Highly absorbed by melanin (the pigment in hair follicles). Ideal for lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I-III) with dark hair. The 755nm wavelength is absorbed more efficiently by melanin than longer wavelengths, which means it delivers energy to the follicle with high precision.

Trade-off: Because melanin in the skin also absorbs 755nm light, this wavelength is used carefully on darker skin tones to avoid pigment changes.

1064nm Nd:YAG

Penetrates deeper into the skin and is less absorbed by epidermal melanin. This makes it safe for all skin tones, including Fitzpatrick IV-VI. The longer wavelength bypasses the melanin in darker skin and reaches the hair follicle directly.

Trade-off: Less melanin absorption means slightly more energy is needed per pulse to achieve the same follicle damage, but the safety profile for darker skin is significantly better.

Having both wavelengths in a single device means your provider can select the optimal wavelength for your specific combination of skin tone and hair type without compromising on safety or efficacy. Ottawa is a diverse city, and a single-wavelength laser cannot safely treat all skin tones.

Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD)

The GentleMax Pro Plus is equipped with a built-in Dynamic Cooling Device that sprays a burst of cryogen (a cooling agent) onto the skin milliseconds before each laser pulse. This serves two functions:

  • Comfort: The cooling sensation significantly reduces the pain of the laser pulse. Most clients describe the sensation with DCD as a quick snap rather than a burn.
  • Skin protection: By cooling the epidermis before the laser fires, the DCD creates a thermal gradient where the skin surface is cool while the deeper follicle absorbs the laser energy. This protects the skin while allowing effective follicle targeting.

How Laser Hair Removal Actually Works

The principle is called selective photothermolysis: targeting a specific chromophore (melanin in the hair follicle) with a specific wavelength of light, delivered in a pulse duration shorter than the time it takes for heat to dissipate from the target to surrounding tissue.

In plain terms: the laser energy is absorbed by the dark pigment in the hair root. The pigment heats up rapidly. That heat damages the structures responsible for hair growth (the dermal papilla and the bulge region of the follicle). If enough damage occurs, the follicle can no longer produce hair.

Why Multiple Sessions Are Required

Hair grows in cycles. At any given time, only 20 to 30 percent of your hair follicles are in the active growth phase (anagen), which is the only phase where the follicle contains enough melanin for the laser to target effectively. The remaining follicles are in transition (catagen) or resting (telogen) phases.

Each laser session treats the follicles that happen to be in anagen at that time. Over multiple sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, you catch different groups of follicles as they cycle into the growth phase. This is why clinical studies show approximately 80% hair reduction after 3 to 4 treatments, with further reduction in subsequent sessions.

Before Your Appointment

2-4 Weeks Before

  • Stop waxing, plucking, and threading. These methods remove the hair root, which is the laser's target. No root means no melanin to absorb the laser energy. The treatment will not work on follicles where the root has been recently removed.
  • Shaving is fine because it cuts hair at the skin surface without disturbing the root below.
  • Avoid tanning (sun and artificial). Tanned skin contains more epidermal melanin, which competes with the follicle melanin for laser absorption. This increases the risk of burns and pigment changes, and may require your provider to reduce laser energy to unsafe-for-efficacy levels.

24 Hours Before

  • Shave the treatment area. The laser needs to target the hair root below the skin, not the shaft above it. Hair protruding above the surface absorbs laser energy at the skin surface, which wastes energy and can cause surface burns. Shave the evening before or morning of your appointment.
  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin. Lotions, deodorant, perfume, and sunscreen on the treatment area can react with the laser or create a barrier that affects energy delivery.

During Your Session

Skin Assessment and Parameter Selection

Your provider assesses your skin tone (Fitzpatrick classification), hair colour, hair density, and the treatment area before selecting laser parameters. These parameters include:

  • Wavelength: 755nm or 1064nm based on your skin tone
  • Fluence: Energy per square centimetre, calibrated to deliver enough energy to damage the follicle without exceeding the skin's thermal tolerance
  • Pulse duration: Longer pulses for coarser hair and darker skin; shorter pulses for fine hair on lighter skin
  • Spot size: IVONNE offers 5 zone sizes (X-Small through X-Large). Larger spot sizes treat faster and penetrate deeper; smaller spots are used for precise areas like the upper lip or bikini line edges.
  • DCD settings: Cooling spray duration and delay calibrated to the treatment area's sensitivity

These are not preset recipes. Your provider adjusts parameters at each session based on your skin's response, the treatment area, and how the hair has responded to previous treatments.

The Treatment Itself

Both you and your provider wear protective eyewear. The provider places the handpiece against the skin and fires in controlled pulses. The DCD sprays before each pulse. You feel a combination of the cold spray and the snap of the laser.

Session duration depends on the treatment area. The GentleMax Pro Plus covers ground efficiently with its larger spot sizes:

  • Upper lip: 5-10 minutes
  • Underarms: 10-15 minutes
  • Bikini/Brazilian: 15-30 minutes
  • Full legs: 45-60 minutes
  • Full back: 30-40 minutes

After Your Session

Immediate Response (Normal)

  • Perifollicular edema: Small raised bumps around each treated follicle, similar to goosebumps. This indicates the laser successfully reached the follicle. It resolves within hours.
  • Erythema (redness): Similar to a mild sunburn, typically resolving within a few hours to one day.
  • Warmth: The treated area may feel warm. A cool compress helps.

Days 7-21: Shedding Phase

Treated hairs do not vaporize during the session. The laser damages the follicle, but the dead hair shaft remains in the skin. Over the next 1 to 3 weeks, these hairs are pushed out as the skin renews. They appear to be growing, but they are being expelled. They will fall out on their own or can be helped along with gentle exfoliation using a soft washcloth.

Do not wax or pluck shedding hairs. Do not mistake shedding for regrowth.

Between Sessions

  • Shaving is fine once redness has resolved (usually 2-3 days)
  • Avoid sun exposure on the treated area and apply SPF 30+ if exposed
  • No waxing, plucking, or threading between sessions
  • Report any unusual reactions to the clinic before your next session

Candidacy: Who Gets the Best Results

Laser hair removal targets melanin. The ideal candidate has dark hair (high follicular melanin) on any skin tone. The GentleMax Pro Plus treats all skin tones safely by selecting the appropriate wavelength.

Hair that lacks sufficient melanin responds poorly or not at all:

  • Blonde hair: Low melanin concentration, often insufficient for effective targeting
  • Red hair: Contains pheomelanin instead of eumelanin, which absorbs laser energy less effectively
  • Grey or white hair: No melanin remaining in the follicle

A consultation determines candidacy based on your specific hair and skin characteristics. Your provider will give you a realistic assessment of expected results rather than making promises the biology cannot support.
