Why Ottawa Winters Are Uniquely Harsh on Skin

Ottawa consistently ranks among the coldest national capitals in the world. Winter temperatures regularly drop below -20 degrees Celsius, and the season stretches from November through March. But temperature alone does not explain why Ottawa winters are so damaging to skin. It is the combination of three concurrent conditions that compromises the skin barrier more aggressively than cold alone.

Cold, Dry Outdoor Air

Cold air holds less moisture. When the temperature drops below freezing, outdoor humidity falls below 30 percent. Your skin loses moisture to this dry air through transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The greater the humidity differential between your skin and the air, the faster you lose water.

Indoor Heating

Forced-air heating in Ottawa homes and offices strips humidity from indoor air, often pushing it below 20 percent. You escape the cold only to enter an environment that is equally dehydrating. The skin gets no reprieve in either environment.
