Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sugar that can bind over 1,000 times its weight in water. It is commonly used as an injectable filler in products like Restylane and Juvéderm, typically administered via syringe.
Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate, is a sugar found naturally in the body. Unlike exfoliating acids like salicylic or glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid acts as a cushioning and lubrication agent for joints, nerves, skin, and eyes.
Hyaluronic acid helps your skin look and feel more supple. Approximately 50% of the hyaluronic acid in your body is found in the skin, where it binds to water, retaining moisture. Topical application of hyaluronic acid can reduce wrinkles, redness, and dermatitis. It is particularly effective when combined with microneedling, as this process enhances the absorption of hyaluronic acid into the skin, promoting hydration and rejuvenation.
Hyaluronic acid molecules are too large to penetrate the epidermis (the uppermost skin layer) on their own. However, when used in conjunction with microneedling or other advanced skin treatments, hyaluronic acid can effectively hydrate and protect the skin. This formula contains a high percentage of High Molecular Weight (HMW) Hyaluronic Acid, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Due to its clean formulation, this product is particularly suitable for protecting and soothing "open skin" and provides rapid hydration to compromised tissue.
Hyaluronic acid requires a humid environment to maximize its moisture-binding properties. Ottawa's climate, with a humidex averaging between 60-80% throughout the year, makes it an optimal environment for microneedling and HA treatments. In contrast, dryer climates, like those found in Las Vegas or certain areas of California, may not yield the same benefits and can even lead to drier skin.
Hyaluronic acid is also an effective filler, commonly used in Restylane and Juvéderm. It is lightweight, easily absorbed, and typically well-tolerated by the body, offering natural-looking results. As a topical moisturizer, it can temporarily fill in fine lines and wrinkles. However, its large molecular size means it cannot penetrate beneath the skin's surface on its own, making microneedling an excellent method for delivering HA into the skin for rejuvenation purposes.
At IVONNE, we believe in evidence-based, scientifically verified products and procedures that promote skin health and a natural appearance. While we do not offer injectable services such as Botox or Juvederm, we do provide microneedling treatments using HA to improve complexion, even out skin tone, and address scars and raised marks.
