If you are considering microneedling in Ottawa, one of the most common questions we hear at IVONNE is: "How long do those tiny holes stay open in my skin?" Understanding the channel closure timeline helps you plan treatments around your professional life, social commitments, and Ottawa's unique climate.
Microneedling (also called collagen induction therapy) is one of our favourite evidence-based methods for skin rejuvenation. The treatment uses fine needles to create thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering your body's natural healing response to produce new collagen and elastin.
Channel closure is often thought to happen rather quickly, with most experts estimating 15 to 20 minutes. We wanted to corroborate this in the scientific literature.
What this means: Your skin remains highly permeable for up to 24 hours after microneedling. This is why what you apply to your skin during this critical window is so important, and why you should avoid certain activities.
Advantages: Less sun exposure, ideal timing for spring results, and you can complete a full 3-4 treatment series.
Challenges: Extreme dryness requires extra moisturizer. Indoor heating further dries skin (use a humidifier). Cover your face outdoors for the first week.
Advantages: Humidity aids healing. Book in early May or late September to avoid peak sun season.
Challenges: Must avoid direct sun for 7-14 days. Mineral sunscreen SPF 50+ every 2 hours outdoors. Avoid outdoor workouts for 48 hours.
Topical numbing cream is applied for comfort. The treatment uses our automated device with needle depth adjusted per area: 0.5-1.0mm for fine lines, 1.5-2.0mm for acne scars, 2.5-3.0mm for severe scarring.
Soothing serum and mineral sunscreen applied. Detailed aftercare instructions customized for Ottawa's climate. Follow-up appointments typically booked 4-6 weeks apart.
| Timeframe | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Redness, slight swelling, tight feeling (like a sunburn) |
| 24 hours | Channels fully closed. Redness still present. Mineral makeup is fine. |
| 48-72 hours | Redness fading. Skin may feel dry and flaky. |
| 1 week | Most redness gone. Skin may have a glow as cell turnover increases. |
| 2-4 weeks | New collagen forming. Smoother texture and smaller pores becoming visible. |
| 4-6 weeks | Optimal results visible. Time for your next treatment in the series. |
| 3-6 months | Peak collagen production. Most dramatic improvement in scars, wrinkles, and texture. |
Most clients achieve optimal results with 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Mild texture issues may only need 2-3 sessions, while deep acne scars may need 5-6 sessions.
With topical numbing cream, most clients describe the sensation as tingling or light scratching. Pain level: 2-3/10.
Wait 24 hours. After that, use mineral-based makeup. Avoid liquid foundation for 48 hours.
Yes. Unlike some laser treatments, microneedling is safe for all skin tones (Fitzpatrick I-VI). Avoid if you have active acne, eczema, cold sores, or blood clotting disorders.
New collagen production peaks at 3-6 months and lasts 6-12 months. Many clients schedule maintenance treatments every 6-12 months to sustain results.
